Sheerness has a stronger working identity than most seaside towns. It sits on the north-west tip of the Isle of Sheppey, where the Medway meets the Thames Estuary, and its port, run by Peel Ports, is one of the country’s major gateways for imported vehicles. The old Royal Navy dockyard in Blue Town handed over to commercial use in 1960, and the town still carries that mix of heritage and heavy industry. Alongside it you’ll find an independent High Street under the 1902 cast-iron clock tower, a Blue Flag beach and Beachfields Park, and the larger stores at Neats Court in Queenborough.
